A great article, applies to not only Police but other branches of LEO and First Responders as well i would say. I can attest that Dr. Gilmartin is a GREAT speaker, and if you ever get the chance to hear his talks, do it, I saw him when he was over here in Victoria and he is brilliant.

This is a fantastic article with lots of practical advice. As a former cop-turned-counsellor, I have to say it is SO IMPORTANT that officers remember that they only see a thin slice of the population, so it is easy to get jaded and lose perspective. I saw time and again in my career in policing and as a counsellor that police who do not balance their personal and professional lives are unhappy. As the article says, it is all about making your personal life important. You have to schedule your priorities - family, physical and mental health, friendships, etc. Lastly, don't wait until there is a problem to see a professional! See one to prevent it from being a problem . It's like waiting until you have diabetes to change your eating habits!

Aaaah... self importance.

Yup. It's the one I nag the new wives about all the time. So often the spouse gets caught up into the "Ohmigosh... my officer is so amazing and does such a scary job, that I need to elevate him (her) to hero status. I'm going to put myself aside and give him his (her) way in everything, so as not to add to the stress".

Bad idea and it simply feeds into the "So important" mode.

Great tips, when read in reverse, for the spouses. Dont' ALLOW them to talk to you like one of their officers (or perps). Expect them to honor their commitments. Etc.

Well said.
