The Power of Silence

We saw one another across the distance of two parking spaces but it might as well have been from across an impossible chasm.  I was with my daughter.  He was with his wife and small child.  The recognition was clear and we looked away at the same time.

There was nothing to say.

I’m not privy to the case, nor do I want to be.   Facts, circumstance, evidence, witnesses – there are many facets to a criminal investigation.

When a police officer is the one arrested the rest of us often don’t know what to say and besides, there are not enough words to describe the letdown and uncertainty.
