Every situation is dynamic, Josh. In this case, the floor where the victim was found had been cleared and it was one of those decisions made to protect the victim from further assault should the remainder of the house not be clear.

An active shooter situation, as a comparison to this incident, would have called for drastically different tactics.

I'm not sure I understand the reasoning behind you not staying with your fellow officers as they were clearing the house. It sounds like a touching story, holding a dying persons hand as the pass on, but what if the house wasn't clear? Maybe it was and you just left it out of this story to make it sound more touching. If the house wasn't clear though, then were you just not needed at the scene, I don't understand why you wouldn't back up you partners in their live or death scenario.

That was a brilliantly written reminder of why we stay in a job where we do the things that our community needs us to do. Not the heroic or spectacular but the quiet moments that no one else will know about.

Every time that we are with someone who is dying, we are reminded of our own life.
Your compassion to this person shone through.
That is the only answer that is needed.

It's true Sandra, you did all you could do. I know it doesn't make it any easier, and you wouldn't be human if you didn't feel the way you did. Your partner is right, you did all you could do.
Take it from me, I've been on the job over 25 years.

Eeek. That's not an easy memory to carry. Thank you for being there.

You haven't mentioned PSD Hondo in a while - is he still doing well?

Dear Sandra,
The strength required: to go through anxiety, anger, fear, compassion, practical knowledge and then get up and do the next thing. I remain awed. Without trying to make it sound as if everything was ever all right in this incident:
He was in some measure fortunate to have such a singer of virtue by his side in his last moments.

Very truly,
Ann T.
