At four-way stops, the rule in my country (South Africa) is not 'yield to the right', as with traffic circles (roundabouts?), but 'first come, first go'. Is that the same in the States and in Canada?

In my neighbourhood there are a lot of traffic circles, two-way stops and four-way stops. There are also lots of elderly people and mothers with little children and people walking their dogs. So I tend to be extra cautious at intersections.

But it still gets my goat so badly, when some impatient twit honks at me from the back because I've stopped at an intersection to allow pedestrians to cross the road, and worse - when he then tailgates me on the next stretch, and overtakes against oncoming traffic with a loud roar of his engine... It's so unnecessarily rude. But I love it when the traffic light up ahead is read. Divine justice. :-) So good on you for putting this man in his place... even if the effect only lasted a short time. I so wish our local cops would tackle dangerous and reckless driving more effectively.

OH my gosh!!! I cannot stop laughing after reading this!! The description of him once you hit the lights is just hilarious!! :) Oh to have been there to watch his face fall when he realized he just told a cop to go "fornicate an inanimate object." lol.

MB - there were many things I could have written him for - speeding in a municipality, misuse of horn, following too closely, driving with undue care and attention, failing to signal lane change to mention a few. Would the tickets have held their own in court? Yes.

As for Mimsy - I'm still scared to ask. Damn rodents....

If he had been less 'humble' about you pulling him over, which offence under the MVA would you have chosen to pursue? I noticed the 30k over...but would that be a tough one if gone to court?

Thanks...

ps. hope that mimsy is doing well! :)

" would shake his/her head and, with greater politeness, wave the other driver on first"
Gulp, I've done that! And yup, it can really mess a good thing up!

Cheers!

Aside from the aggressive behavior, road rage and demeaning comments, this story is hilarious. Of course if Mr. HB "didn't see" the pedestrian, he didn't pick up on the unmarked car. Way to get him before he hurt someone.

Most drivers know that when two cars arrive at a four-way stop, the one to the right goes first.

But when I grew up in the Mid-South, politeness required a visible cue from one driver to the next. And not to be out-done, a driver receiving the wave to go ahead would shake his/her head and, with greater politeness, wave the other driver on first. Sometimes this would take several passes before one of the cars would finally proceed through the intersection.

As a result, in Memphis (back then) a "grid lock" was understood to be what happens if four cars arrive simultaneously at a four-way stop. One of the Memphis Blue typically had to be dispatched to clear the intersection.

And that's the gospel truth!

"What I really wanted to do was give Mr. HB a lecture on common courtesy and how he had none, but that would have been counter productive".
I agree. I was never one to waste valuable oxygen, when I could save it for something constructive like blowing up a child's balloon.
We all know of course that Buddy was being "humble" to the Uniform. The average motorist would have sollicited quite a different response from Buddy. Imagine living with that bozo! Just imagine......................
Thanks by the way to "DC" for the cool Link!
